What George Lucas Thinks of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Dec 08, 2015

Ever since he stepped away from the Star Wars franchise, handing over the reigns to Disney, Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, fans still have an immense desire to know what George Lucas thinks of the new direction the franchise is taking.

We've heard him compare his Star Wars departure to a "divorce," and how it'll be like hanging out with his ex wife at the Force Awakens premiere (thank god for that prenup!), but now that he's actually seen the year's most anticipated film, well... what does he really think?

He likes it. There. Okay? He likes it! That's according to Kathleen Kennedy, who was asked what his response was. But when Lucas himself was asked, his answer is actually the greatest possible scenario for fans.

"I think the fans are going to love it,” he said. “It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

It's strange how we've arrived at this point where both the fans and creator of this massive franchise are at odds as to what they each want to see from the story. This is part of the reason why the prequels weren't so well received, nor those digital upgrades to the original trilogy. Many felt Lucas was making these decisions based solely on what he wanted to see, and not listening to the fans.

But should he have to listen to the fans?

That actually brings up a good question: at what point does a franchise belong to its fans instead of its creator? Can the two coexist without disagreeing on pretty much every little detail?

With Abrams at the helm of The Force Awakens, in many ways the Star Wars franchise is now literally in the hands of its longtime fans, which is probably why Lucas feels the way he does about the film and how it's something the fans will appreciate moreso than the guy who originally birthed them.

This time a Star Wars movie was made by fans for fans, and for that reason alone The Force Awakens is quite unlike any Star Wars movie we've seen yet.

Does that make it better? We only have a few more days to go on that one. Star Wars: The Force Awakens drops December 18.
