This week there's been report of two possible spin-off movies based on 2013 releases. Today's announcement was the more official one: according to Deadline, Paul Feig is developing a comedy featuring minor characters from The Heat, namely members of Melisssa McCarthy's character's extended family played by Jamie Denbo and Jessica Chaffin. Earlier, an interview at Collider with Adam McKay revealed an idea in the works for an Anchorman 2 spin-off focused on Ron Burgundy's son and dog, which could be G-rated.
Interestingly enough, both those ideas come from people associated with Judd Apatow (who produced the upcoming Anchorman sequel and Feig's previous comedy Bridesmaids), who has often shown an interest in branching off characters. His last directorial effort, This Is 40, was even a spin-off of Knocked Up, albeit one officially branded a "Sort-of Sequel" (see our discussion from last year asking for your ideas for other sort-of sequels). Before that, he produced Get Him to the Greek, which was a spin-off of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. And in the past he's teased plans for a Funny People spin-off focused on Aziz Ansari's character, and I still hope that idea is revisited.
If Apatow's trend catches on with the rest of Hollywood (or has it already, given plans for Star Wars and Harry Potter spin-offs?), what other supporting characters could be up for their own features? One that's already been talked a bunch this year is the possibilty of Tom Hiddleston getting a solo movie centered on Loki from the Thor franchise. That would be great given that the end of Thor: The Dark World has his character in need of being dealt with again, but we might as well see him not return as the villain in another Thor movie, because that series needs to find other places to go.
And no need to suggest the Minions from the Despicable Me movies, because that's not just a possibility it's an actual feature in the works for a 2015 release. How about Alien from Spring Breakers? We already included that on a list earlier this year, but that doesn't mean it's not still a good idea. My pick would be the kid from Bad Grandpa. He's the much funnier of the film's main duo and I'd rather see a sequel focused on him without Johnny Knoxville in his old man makeup dragging him down. I'd also love a spin-off of the new documenary Caucus that just follows Marcus Bachmann as he goes town to town challenging men to thumb wars.
What 2013 movie characters deserve spin-off movies?
