Werner Herzog to Direct a Concert Performance of the Killers

Aug 30, 2012

From the folks that united Jack White and Gary Oldman, Arcade Fire and Terry Gilliam, and Duran Duran and David Lynch comes... Werner Herzog and the Killers. The American Express Unstaged live webcast series will host the auteur for a concert in the Bronx next month. "He has ideas for someone crowd-surfing with a camera on," Killers bassist Mark Stoermer told Rolling Stone. "He's gonna put cameras on Ronnie [Vannucci, Jr.] while he's playing drums."

Herzog did his homework and studied previous installments in the music series so he could figure out what worked and what didn't. "He wanted to not make any mistakes that any of the other directors may have made," Stoermer said. "He definitely wanted to make the best version of this live AMEX performance of any director so far." We can't imagine it being any less than perfect. The band chose the Cave of Forgotten Dreams director for his "unique ideas," which he'll be putting to spectacular and profound use as always in his upcoming documentary projects, On Death Row and Hate in America. The first is a three-part follow-up to Into the Abyss, featuring interviews with convicted felons and their families. The latter is a four-part study in hate crime.

We're guessing Herzog really needs this Killers gig to make sure dinner conversations with his wife stay light — at least until the solemn filmmaker stars as a villain in Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher. The concert airs live on YouTube September 18 at 7 p.m. Check out the teaser trailer below to get in the mood.
