Weinstein and Meryl Streep Plan to Take on the National Rifle Association in New Movie

Jan 16, 2014

Harvey WeinsteinHarvey Weinstein has made a lot of films over the course of his career -- but his latest project might be his most incendiary yet.
The mogul recently appeared on The Howard Stern Show, where he revealed plans to team up with Oscar-nominated actress Meryl Streep on a project designed to make the National Rifle Association "wish they weren't alive." I can't possibly see this starting any anti-Hollywood sentiment at all...
The topic came up after Stern asked Weinstein if he was a gun owner. The producer replied that he wasn't, and then followed it up with his observations about gun ownership and the NRA:
"I don’t think we need guns in this country. And I hate it. I think the NRA is a disaster area.”
From there, he segued into his plans for the new feature.
"I shouldn’t say this, but I’ll tell it to you, Howard. I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this head-on. And they’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”
Weinstein went on to add that the film will be a "big" picture -- not unlike Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Weinstein didn't reveal any plot details about the project, but the mere mention of the NRA is sure to rile up the organization's five million members and reignite the long and angry national debate over gun control. Still, the real question is, will it be a good film? Sometimes when filmmakers and production people get too passionate about a topic, it's actually detrimental to the finished product. Stating you're making a film with the intention of making a group of people wish they weren't alive is probably a red flag that you might be on the wrong side of that line.
We'll have to wait and see how this all pans out.
