The Weekend Rent: When Robert [Rodriguez] Met Danny [Trejo]

Sep 03, 2010

You've f**d with the wrong Mexican this weekend if you don't check out Danny Trejo's first leading role ever in Robert Rodriguez's Machete, a shamelessly outrageous Mexploitation action flick co-starring Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan and Robert De Niro. "Machete don't text," but he is the most fun you'll have at the theater while it's still summer. If you can't make it this weekend, check out at home some of these other collaborations between Rodriguez and his tough-guy muse with an unforgettable mug.

Planet Terror: Rodriguez's half of the Grindhouse double feature is the first time you can see Trejo as Machete in one of the fake trailers that precede Planet Terror. The trailer proved to be so popular that people kept asking Rodriguez if he would film it for real, so he finally did so by retro-creating Machete five years later from the footage shot for Planet Terror, which is available on both DVD and Blu-ray.

From Dusk Till Dawn: Two criminals (George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino) and their hostages hole up in a bar that is populated by vampires, including the boa-loving Salma Hayek. Trejo plays Razor Charlie, the bartender who tries to kick Clooney and Tarantino out of the Mexican strip joint before the bloodletting begins.

Desperado: In this second entry in Rodriguez's El Mariachi series starring Antonia Banderas, Trejo plays the knife-throwing man in black known as Navajas—someone Steve Buscemi's character wishes he didn't run into.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico: Trejo returned for the final chapter in the El Mariachi trilogy, but this time played a different character: Cucuy, a pissed-off Mexican who turns on El Mariachi and the CIA agent played by Johnny Depp.

Spy Kids/Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams/Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over: In Rodriguez's family-friendly series, Trejo plays Isador "Machete" Cortez, an inventor and the estranged brother of Gregorio Cortez (Antonia Banderas), who is the father of the titular tots. This alternate Machete character will be returning for Spy Kids 4, which is currently in production.
