Yet another twist on the Brothers Grimm fairytale Snow White will try to put a spell on theater audiences this weekend with Mirror Mirror, a lighthearted comedy-fantasy starring Julia Roberts as the wicked queen, Lily Collins as Snow White and Armie Hammer as the handsome prince. In the movie, Snow White is banned to the forest by Queen Clementianna and is rescued by a band of highway robbers (i.e. the seven dwarfs) as Ms. White bides her time and becomes determined to reclaim her realm from the evil enchantress.
Back in 1984, Shelley Duvall's fantastical television series Faerie Tale Theatre did a version of Snow White featuring Vanessa Redgrave as the Queen, Elizabeth McGovern as Snow White and, most memorably, Vincent Price as Magic Mirror. Duvall herself made an appearance in the episode as Snow White's mother. The complete Faerie Tale Theatre Series is available on DVD.
There have been many incarnations of Snow White on the big screen and TV over the years, but the fairest of them all has to be the one in Disney's 1937 animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The movie was the first full-length cel-animated feature, the first in color and the first to be produced by Disney. The American Film Institute named it the best American animated film of all time in 2008. The family-film favorite is available on both DVD and Blu-ray.
The straight-to-DVD 1987 production Snow White starring Diana Rigg as the Queen and Sarah Patterson as the titular character is a musical distributed by MGM that has the Queen being invited to the Prince's wedding only to find that the bride is a very alive Snow White.
One of the most fascinating interpretations of Snow White—and the one that remains truest to the dark tone of the fairytale—is 1997's Snow White: A Tale of Terror. This horror movie has the dwarfs as outcast miners living on the fringe of society who rescue one Lily Hoffman (Monica Keena) after her wicked stepmother, Lady Claudia Hoffman (Sigourney Weaver), orders Lily killed for being, well, the fairest of the fair. Sam Neill stars as Lily's father and Weaver gives a gracefully sinister performance in this underrated interpretation that is available on DVD and Netflix Watch Instantly.
A present-day take on Snow White currently airs on the ABC fantasy series Once Upon a Time, in which the daughter and grandson of Snow White and Prince Charming hold the key to breaking a curse on a small Maine town. Episodes of Once Upon a Time can be streamed on various VOD services and a DVD collection of the first five episodes is also available.
If all of this doesn't get you in a Grimm mood for the classic fairytale, yet another big-screen spin on the character is coming this June in Snow White and the Huntsman, which looks like an epic fantasy drama and stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White and a deliciously wicked Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna.
