We're Getting New 'Transformers' Movies Every Year Beginning in 2017

Feb 12, 2016

It's been almost two years since we got a new Transformers movie. And the next one hasn't even begun filming (they start in May). That's a long wait for those of you with cravings for more robotic Bayhem. It used to be that we got one of these things every two years. It's now turned into a three-year wait.

Fortunately, the timing is about to change in your favor. Paramount just announced that beginning with next year's fifth installment we're going to get a new Transformers movie every single year. At least through 2019.

Here's what we know about the future of the franchise so far:

When can we expect more Transformers sequels?

As per the latest release date announcement, Transformers 5 comes out June 23, 2017, Transformers 6 is due in theaters on June 8, 2018, and Transformers 7 arrives on June 28, 2019.

And after that?

As we heard last year, Akiva Goldsman has been leading a writer's room for the Tranformers franchise, and so far Hasbro revealed they have plans for at least four more live-action movies to keep the series going through another decade. Of course, that timeline seems to have assumed the movies would be out every other year. Part eight could very well end up slated for June 2020 and that's cutting the 10-year promise in half. It just doesn't seem likely they'd go back to longer wait times after this one-a-year business.

What about the spinoffs?

Transformers has been talked about as getting its own kind of cinematic universe, a la Marvel. But today's announcement didn't offer anything as far as an update on that idea nor of the previously announced animated prequel set on Cybertron. I would have thought Paramount would announce the new release dates without numerical sequel stamps attached, which would have allowed for a Star Wars style trajectory. Regular continuity sequel every other year, spinoffs alternating.

How about crossovers?

We can bet with utmost certainty that there will never be a crossover with Jem, as John M. Chu speculated last year. And there's still nothing to the possibility of any overlap with G.I. Joe or any other Hasbro franchise. With news last week that Hasbro could merge with Mattel, though, it's now time to also ponder the idea of the Transformers teaming up with He-Man or Barbie.

Is Michael Bay directing the three scheduled sequels?

Bay is set to direct Transformers 5, but he says this one really is truly his last, he's certain, again. So, beginning with 2018's sixth installment, we could have a whole new person at the helm of the movies. Maybe not a whole new aesthetic, though.

And is Mark Wahlberg back for more?

The actor, who joined the franchise with the fourth installment, Transformers: Age of Extinctionstated in December that he's starring in the next one, at least. Previously he'd said he would be doing a few, but so far we've only gotten a confirmation for part five.

Can you remind us of those new release dates again?

June 23, 2017: Transformers 5

June 8, 2018: Transformers 6
