Watch/Listen/Learn: Movie Alien Mashup, Tree of Life Score and Area 51 Declassified

May 23, 2011

Welcome to Watch/Listen/Learn, a new feature here at that should be pretty self-explanatory.

Watch: The Ultimate Movie Alien Mashup

2011 was all about alien movies even before we hit the summer season (Battle: Los Angeles, anyone?), but now we're hitting a block chock-full of movies about beings from other planets (Thor, Super 8, Green Lantern, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Cowboys and Aliens), and so naturally someone has decided to put together the ultimate movie alien mashup, a video montage featuring a whole heckuva lot of alien-related movies, including the ones due out this summer. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.

Listen: The Tree of Life Score

Hot off its big Palme d'Or win at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival (and right before it's set to debut in theaters in limited release later this week), a few tracks from the score for Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life have arrived online. There are three clips in total from Alexandre Desplat's score, which officially arrives in stores tomorrow. Regardless of the mixed reviews the film has been receiving, The Playlist (who pointed us toward these sample tracks) still say that it "contains pockets of brilliance, awe-inspiring visuals and a thematic reach that simply is unlike anything being attempted in mainstream or indie cinema. In short, it’s still an event and a film that must be experienced on a big screen." LISTEN RIGHT HERE

Learn: New Documentary Goes Inside the Mysterious Area 51

The secretive, mysterious military base has cropped up in a number of sci-fi films over the years, and for good reason. With rumors of alien spaceships, alien beings and cover-ups dominating the rhetoric of those alien conspiracy theorists out there, Hollywood has used the hype to add a dose of reality to their other-worldly projects. Now, thanks to some declassified material, the National Geographic Channel is getting ready to debut a new documentary tomorrow night called Area 51 Declassified, which won't exactly offer up proof of the alien goings-on over at the base, but it will provide a never-before-seen look at some of the secret projects and cover-ups that have taken place over the years. Expect to see some pretty cool images, like the one above featuring a titanium A-12 spy plane that looks like something straight out of Flight of the Navigator. [via The Daily Mail]
