Watch Will Smith Accidentally Summon Death Into His Life In First 'Collateral Beauty' Trailer

Sep 07, 2016

If last year's hit horror movie Krampus taught us anything it's that you should never write letters to mythical figures. Will Smith's character in Collateral Beauty, sadly, never learned that lesson. If he had, he may never have written a letter to Death and accidentally summoned the eternal lord into his life.

While that sounds like a killer pitch for a horror movie, the first trailer for the new movie from the director of The Devil Wears Prada is far from terrifying. It actually sets up a teary-eyed story about a father (Smith) spiraling into depression after the loss of a loved one. The one source of therapy he finds that works is writing angry letters to the editors of the universe, also known as Death, Love and Time. He even goes so far as to pop them in a mailbox, because why not? He's just letting off some steam. Nothing weird will happen, right?

Cue the human forms of Death (Helen Mirren, of course), Love (Keira Knightley) and Time (Jacob Latimore) popping into his life for a little soulful intervention. Mix in a larger supporting cast that includes Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, Michael Pena and Ann Dowd, and you've got a remarkably good cast assembled for what looks like a cute, heartwarming tale in the vein of It's a Wonderful Life.

Collateral Beauty hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
