Prepare for another blast of '80s nostalgia thanks to someone's old VHS copy of a 1988 episode of Entertainment Tonight dedicated to the special effects-packed movies of the summer: The Blob, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Die Hard, Phantasm II, and, um, Big Business starring Bette Middler and Lily Tomlin. And while this video is fun just for the sheer '80s-ness of it, it's actually a pretty stark reminder of how great some of these special effects are, even by today's standards.
I've long felt that The Blob is one of the best horror movies of its decade, though a lot of my love for it comes down to the script and the earnestness of everything. The incredible practical effects are only a bonus. And then there's Elm Street 4, which has some really wild spectacle in it (you can see how Freddy's chest of souls was made in this clip, and we're guessing it's a much larger, more elaborate piece than you'd think). Even the detonation of the roof of the Nakatomi Plaza in Die Hard was a pretty huge effect for the time, and it still holds up today.
Also included in this clip is a special preview of Timothy Dalton's Bond movie License to Kill, which was still a year away at that point.
Big thanks to Shock Till You Drop for the smile this find gave us.
