Scarface

Pop quiz: which gangster movie is better – De Palma’s Scarface or Scorsese’s Goodfellas? It’s a trick question – both are awesome. Even if you disagree, I’m willing to bet you’re going to enjoy both of these documentaries that take you behind the scenes of these classic crime flicks.

If you own the Blu-ray of Scorsese’s mob flick, then you may have already seen Getting Made: The Making of Goodfellas – which is a fantastic 30-minute documentary that gives us a peek inside of one of the filmmaker’s greatest flicks.

The feature gives viewers lots of insight into the creation of the film – talking about all the elements of the process, from preproduction through to release. If you haven’t had a chance to see it before, fix that issue posthaste by checking it out below. [via The Film Stage]

I’m not exactly sure why Scarface has become such a cultural touchstone, but you can’t turn on an episode of MTV’s Cribs without seeing some young male celeb proclaim his love for Tony Montana (usually while showing you his DVD copy of the film). I love Scarface – but having just watched it again the other night, it has not aged particularly well (ah, those ‘80s fashions) and it certainly has some genuinely campy moments. Maybe the ending trumps all that, though – it really is pretty phenomenal.

Whatever the case may be, Scarface is arguably even more popular today than it was when it was released back in 1983. Pacino’s portrayal of drug kingpin Tony Montana is iconic and De Palma does an admirable job of capturing the glitz, violence and excess of the drug scene in the days before the “Just Say No” era.

Website Filmmaker IQ has shared this excellent 36-minute interview with Pacino and De Palma waxing poetic about making their epic feature. Even if you’ve watched Montana bury those cockroaches a hundred times, you’re sure to learn something new in this entertaining clip.
