Watch: The Trailer(s) for M. Night Shyamalan's 'After Earth'

Updated: We've added the domestic trailer below as well, via Yahoo

The first international trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth has found its way online ahead of the domestic trailer, which arrives later today. We didn't quite know what to expect from this film since it's directed by a guy who's navigated his way through a forest of negative opinion in recent years only to watch it lead to this film, starring Hollywood's go-to ace Will Smith and his son, Jaden. It's a big summer blockbuster -- due in theaters on June 7, 2013 -- and it's easily a film that can help Shyamalan win back those detractors should he succeed at delivering a big story with grand ideas (and effects) that at the same time feels intimate and personal. Based on this first trailer, things are looking good.

We get a sense that this film will really be in the hands of Jaden Smith moreso than his father Will. Much of the trailer shows Jaden off exploring a dangerous version of post-apocalyptic Earth full of all sorts of threats, while we hear a voiceover from Will Smith talking about not being afraid ("fear is not real"). It looks big in scope -- lots of effects, a variety of menacing creatures -- and this could certainly be a film that turns Jaden Smith into an action star like his father, who looks to be passing a torch here to his son in a lot of ways.

Check out the trailer below (via The Film Stage) and let us know what you think.

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
