Earlier today the first official images from the big screen version of Stephenie Meyer's The Host hit online, and now we've got some moving images to go with them in the form of the film's first teaser trailer. And a teaser it indeed is, since this really does look like it could have been made by a fan and not anyone officially involved with the Andrew Niccol-directed production. But hey, that's okay because we're sure existing fans of the author's first non-Twilight book will find themselves a bit more invested than the average Joe who has no idea what this film is about.
As for what The Host is actually about, we turn to the novel's official synopsis:
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, didn't expect to find its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who still lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Reluctant allies, Wanderer and Melanie set off to search for the man they both love.
Having not read the book, and ignoring any "From the author of Twilight" stigma, The Host sounds like it has a potentially funky premise. Whether or not that dueling minds in the same body hook can be communicated on the big screen remains to be seen, though. Had you asked me two years ago if I'd be down for an alien possession movie from the director of Gattaca, excitement would be guaranteed. But since then the supremely disappointing In Time has come and gone, taking with it a chunk of our good will toward Niccol. At least star Saoirse Ronan had a welcome hit last year with the vaguely sci-fi Hanna, so maybe she can be a better muse than Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake were.
But what say you, pre-existing fans of The Host? Does this teaser, via Yahoo, get you excited for the real deal?
