Watch: Quentin Tarantino Explains Why He Wants to Quit the Film Business

Dec 05, 2012

Recently Quentin Tarantino became the latest high-profile director to admit that he may not be directing movies too much longer. Following in the footsteps of Steven Soderbergh, whose last film (or so he says) is due out next year, Tarantino has gone on record saying he just doesn't want to keep making movies for the rest of his life. During The Hollywood Reporter's annual roundtable discussion featuring some of the year's more well-known (and praised) directors, Tarantino elaborated a bit more on why he wants to quit filmmaking, and what he plans to do next.

I don't intend to be a director deep into my old age," he says to the group. "I'll probably just be a writer. I'll write novels, film literature, film books and subtextual film criticism, things like that." Tarantino added that it's the digital revolution that's turning him off the most. "I can't stand all this digital stuff -- this is not what I signed up. It's all just television in public." In typical Tarantino fashion he's a bit all over the place in his criticisms of digital, but he does add an interesting tidbit in there at the end by admitting that he may wind up taking one of his massive scripts and turning it into a miniseries for HBO.

So the good news here for fans of Tarantino is that regardless of when he decides to stop making movies on the big screen, he won't go away. We'll still see (and probably read) a lot more from the man, and we can't be the only ones who would absolutely love to see him tackle a multi-part miniseries for HBO.

You can watch the entire roundtable discussion here.
