Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Update: The charming final trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again first establishes its premise, as a pregnant Amanda Seyfried meets with Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard on a magical Greek island. The years then roll back, to see how her young mother (played by Lily James) and her three handsome suitors first got together. We also see Andy Garcia and, yes, Cher, as a most unlikely grandmother.

Watch the trailer below. The film will open in theaters on July 20.

(Read more about the film in our previously-published post below.)

Based on the popular ABBA jukebox musical, Mamma Mia! The Movie was a smash hit back in 2008. Despite its mixed reviews (54% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes) and modest opening, the adaptation of the stage production was a steady success in theaters, ultimately grossing $144 million in North America and $600 million worldwide. Ten years later, a sequel is on its way and the first trailer has just arrived online.

Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again returns to the island of Kalokairi with more ABBA tunes to sing (though the spot below features three favorites from the original that will likely be reprised) and a backstory to tell, as mother Donna shares more on her romances with Sophie's possible dads Sam, Harry and Bill, and we get to see it all play out in lengthy flashback form.

Watch the trailer below.

Who is back for the sequel?

Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried return as mother and daughter Donna and Sophie, while Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard reprise their respective roles as Sam, Harry and Bill. Christine Baranski and Julie Walters are also back as Donna's friends Tanya and Rosie, and Dominic Cooper returns as Sophie's husband, Sky.

Who is playing the ensemble in the past?

Lily James (Cinderella) is portraying young Donna, while Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), Hugh Skinner (Les Miserables) and Josh Dylan (Allied) respectively play young Sam, young Harry and young Bill. Jessica Keenan Wynn (off-Broadway's Heathers: The Musical) and Alexa Davies (TV's Harlots) are the younger versions of friends Tanya and Rosie.

Are there any other cast additions?

There sure are. Andy Garcia will appear in a secretive role for which no details are known, and none other than legendary diva Cher -- who makes a glamorous intro at the end of the trailer -- is playing Donna's mother, Ruby.

Does it have the same director?

No, the new movie is written and directed by Ol Parker, whose screenplays include The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel and who helmed the 2005 romantic comedy Imagine Me & You and the 2012 romantic drama Now Is Good. Parker's script for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is based on a story he conceived with the original's writer, Catherine Johnson, and Richard Curtis (Love Actually).

What is known of the plot?

Very little, outside of the basic prequel-ish premise. From Universal's official synopis: "You are invited to return to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi in an all-new original musical based on the songs of ABBA ... the film goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present."

When does the sequel come out?

July 20, 2018, exactly 10 years after the release of the first movie.
