Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

We're only days away from the theatrical release of the spin-off adventure Rogue One: A Star Wars Story -- advance tickets are now on sale at Fandango -- and two new trailers tease the humor and humanity of the movie. While dedicated fans are already familiar with the premise, it's worth repeating for the benefit of those who are still catching their breath after the onset of the holiday season this past weekend.

Rather than continuing the story told in last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- that will come in the not yet titled eighth episode, due in theaters on December 15, 2017 -- the new movie rewinds to a time shortly before the beginning of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. A group of rebels team up on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, which threatens to obliterate any opposition.

Watch a new trailer below and Imagine that you've heard nothing else about the film before now.

The trailer does a good job of setting up the story as well as the tone, which is not all doom and gloom. Yes, it's a dangerous mission in perilous times, but the cheeky response by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) to something going wrong is reminiscent of moments in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back when things didn't work out as expected.

We also get to see two brief, humorous scenes featuring K-2SO (pronounced "Kay-Tuesso" and voiced by Alan Tudyk), a tall, reprogrammed Imperial security droid that is now loyal to the rebel alliance. Another new trailer features much of the same footage, but an introductory scene suggests a little more about Jyn Erso's background.

The second trailer includes a little more footage with blind rebel Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang), who are apparently battle mates. The villainous Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) is clearly established, though the sound of Darth Vader breathing is as diabolical as ever.

Speaking of Darth Vader breathing, here's the latest TV spot, which showcases that sound.

Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story opens on December 16.
