Watch: Joe Lynch Unveils the First Badass Trailer for 'Knights of Badassdom'

Still from Joe Lynch's Knights of Badassdom

Comic-Con might be over, but we’ve still got cool stuff to share from the show – and while there were many amazing sights at this year’s gathering, I don’t think anything trumped the absolute awesomeness of Joe Lynch’s Knights of Badassdom trailer.

Set in the world of Live Action Role Playing (LARPing – think of it like Dungeons & Dragons – only with the players acting out the action in elaborate costumes), Lynch’s feature finds a group of friends partaking in a large LARP event. Things turn scary when one of them accidentally summons a real succubus – who starts eating every wannabe Aragorn in sight. Now, it’s up to the LARPers to put their battle skills to the test and stop the beast once and for all.

Lynch, best known for helming the surprisingly fun sequel Wrong Turn 2, appears to have crafted another perfect blend of comedy and horror with his latest release. LARPing is often the butt of jokes amongst the public at large, but the filmmaker didn’t want to take that approach in this outing. Lynch told FEARnet how he went about treating the LARPing phenomenon in the film.

“The LARPing community is very sacred about the way they are perceived. They don't want to be considered a joke, and we didn't want them to be a joke. The theme of the movie is wish fulfillment," he said. "Matt [Wall, one of the writers] and I actually went on a couple LARPs... Once you put on a helmet and armor and grab a sword, you are in goddamn Braveheart or Excalibur! That was the moment that I knew how to approach this movie: absolute respect to culture, but still have a little fun with it. If someone sees the movie and afterwards says, 'I wanna LARP!' then we have done our jobs."

Knights of Badassdom features performances from Ryan Kwanten, Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, and Steve Zahn. Expect the film to lay siege to a theater near you next spring. Until then, geek out over the trailer below.
