Ride Along 2

Buddy cop movies enjoyed their heyday in the 1980s, teaming unlikely partners like Nick Nolte and Eddie Murray in 48 Hrs. and Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon. The idea was to pair up two very different personalities, ensuring the conflicts and resolutions needed to liven up standard police procedurals. Recent examples run the gamut from R.I.P.D. (recently deceased Ryan Reynolds and supernatural veteran Jeff Bridges) to The Heat (cocky FBI agent Sandra Bullock and streetwise Melissa McCarthy).

In 2014, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart teamed up for the action-comedy Ride Along, starring as a veteran undercover officer and a security guard in Atlanta, respectively. Adding to the hilarity, the security guard wants to marry the detective's sister (Tika Sumpter), which offers plenty of opportunities for new and funny variations on the buddy cop formula.

The movie was a big success at the box office, earning more than $154 million worldwide, but months before it was released, a sequel had already been announced. Ride Along 2 finds Kevin Hart, now graduated from the police academy, aiming to become a detective. He and Ice Cube are assigned to go to Miami to help catch a major drug dealer (Benjamin Bratt).

The new trailer showcases the duo still mixing it up with comedy hijinks, but in new surroundings with new characters surrounding them. Ride Along 2 will open in theaters on January 15, 2016.
