Watch: First Trailer for Tim Burton's Latest Animated Film, 'Frankenweenie'

Fun fact: Tim Burton's original, live-action Frankenweenie got him fired from Disney. The short film was created to play theatrically in front of the 1984 re-release of Pinocchio, but the heads at the Mouse House felt its dark comedic tone was not only out of step with the company, but that Burton had actively wasted their time and money producing it. They pulled the short and gave Burton the axe. Fast forward nearly 30 years and now Disney is paying the writer-director millions of dollars to do a stop-motion remake of the film that got him fired. It must feel pretty good to be Tim Burton right now.

As for this new Frankenweenie, Disney has just premiered the first trailer for the film, and it is unmistakably a Tim Burton creation. Say what you will about the man's style, but all his hits (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and his misses (Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) bear his very specific, in-love-with-the-macabre stamp. We wish we could say more Hollywood director's had that auteurship.

After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life -- with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor's fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new "leash on life" can be monstrous.
