Watch: First 'Ocean's 8' Trailer Introduces the New Faces of the 'Ocean's 11' Franchise

Dec 19, 2017

We've seen three movies led by George Clooney's Danny Ocean. Now it's time for his sister, Debbie (Sandra Bullock), to take over in a female-focused spin-off of Ocean's Eleven and its male-dominated sequels. The first trailer for Ocean's 8 introduces us to the new pack of criminals, glamorously played by the likes of Cate Blanchett and Rihanna, who team up to pull off a heist during New York City's Met Gala.

This could be the start of a whole new series (there's room for a Ocean's 9 and Ocean's 10), or it may turn out to be just a fancy offshoot gimmick without good reason for being. That amazing cast, though, including Anne Hathaway as a wealthy socialite, couldn't possibly have been brought together for nothing. Despite not having the same director as the other three, Ocean's 8 will hopefully continue the franchise's charm and spirit.

Watch the trailer below.

Who is the director?

Gary Ross, who helmed The Hunger Games and Seabiscuit, takes over the franchise's reins from Steven Soderbergh.

Who are the writers?

Ross also co-wrote the script with Olivia Milch, who earns her first credit here.

Is Soderbergh involved?

Yes, he's one of the movie's producers.

Who all is in the movie?

The titular eight are played by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina and ... maybe Anne Hathaway? (The trailer hints she might be part of the heist, but it's not entirely clear.) They're joined by Richard Armitage, James Corden and a ton of famous people making cameos as themselves.

Anyone from the original Ocean's trilogy?

Yes, Matt Damon and Carl Reiner are expected to make appearances as Linus and Bloom, respectively.

What is the plot?

"Debbie Ocean gathers a crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's yearly Met Gala" is the simple synopsis now provided by Warner Bros. This other plot description was shared earlier this year: "In Summer 2018, the tide will turn as Debbie Ocean (Bullock) attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. Her first stop is to assemble the perfect crew: Lou (Blanchett); Nine Ball (Rihanna); Amita (Kaling); Constance (Awkwafina); Rose (Bonham Carter); Daphne Kluger (Hathaway); and Tammy (Paulson)."

When does it come out?

June 8, 2018.
