While the first teaser for Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac remake was quickly pulled from the Internet, a better, full-length, clip has come to take its place. If you ever wanted to see Frodo Baggins go nutso and scalp a bunch of women, this is your lucky day.
Twitch was kind enough to share the trailer with the masses, and early impressions are mostly positive. The film, which is a remake of William Lustig’s sleazy slasher classic, features Elijah Wood as killer with a penchant for slaughtering women and removing their hair – skin and all. Wood has large shoes to fill – his character was originally played by the late Joe Spinell – but he appears to be up to the task. It’s a slightly different take on the character, judging from the preview, but it seems to work. Now the real question is will someone be able to recreate the magnificent shotgun to the head gore effect that came courtesy of Tom Savini? CGI won’t cut it…
Maniac is currently screening as part of Cannes’ midnight slate, but if you couldn’t make it to France, this trailer will have to suffice. Check it out – as well as the full plot synopsis – below.
Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt.
Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.
A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in present-day LA, MANIAC is a re-boot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made - an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiralling nightmare of a killer and his victims.
