We’ve been following Young Adult for awhile now – because any film that reunites the Juno team of Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody is something we’re interested in checking out. The film’s premise, which finds a successful young adult novelist returning to her home town with the idea that she’ll rekindle a romance with her former flame – who’s now happily married – sounds just crazy enough to make for a compelling comedy. The casting of Charlize Theron in the title role, and the always entertaining Patton Oswalt as her high school chum, are the proverbial icing on the cake.
Today, we got our first look at the trailer for Young Adult – and all in all, it looks pretty good. Theron and Oswalt seem to have not only genuine chemistry, but great comedic timing, and Reitman’s keen eye seems focused on skewering the foibles of small town America. The clip may only be two minutes long, but it manages to fit in quite a few funny lines of dialogue during its abbreviated running time. With a lesser director at the helm, we’d be worried that maybe the trailer showed us all the best parts of Young Adult, but given Reitman’s track record, we’re willing to bet there’s a lot of great jokes left to be discovered when the film hits theaters on December 16th.
Until then, have a peek at the trailer and let us know what you think.
UPDATE: Alternatively, a second trailer has premiered over at Slashfilm. This one is a bit more PG-13ish, in case you were wondering what the difference was.
