It’s hard to believe that Disney Studios, a titan in the field of animation, no longer has a hand-drawn animation department. When the studio cleared the branch earlier this year, one of the artists who suddenly found himself unemployed was Nik Raneri – who was just about to hit his 25-year anniversary with the company. Ouch.
Ranieri might have lost a great gig that had kept him fed for a quarter of a century, but he doesn’t seem too bitter about it. And as a parting gift, he’s shared this hand-drawn clip of final test animation from Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph.
The artist explains that he drew every frame personally, which is not the norm. “…I wanted it fully animated and since I didn’t have any in-betweeners, I had to draw everything." The end result is a very cool look at the character of Ralph as he explains who he is.
Ranieri also offered his thoughts on the loss of his job, saying “I’m not so much sad that I was let go as I am sad that they gave up on a medium that, if given the right treatment, could be a viable product once again.” Check out the clip below and we think you’ll agree.
