Watch: Alex Israel's Hallucinatory Celebrity Interview Series Inspired by Talk Show Blather and L.A. Pomp

Apr 06, 2012

L.A. artist Alex Israel has created a hallucinatory snapshot of celebrity weirdness and talk show redundancy with his new video series As It Lays. (I mentioned the show on Flavorwire last night.) Israel dons a black suit and sunglasses, and grips a deck of index cards for his deadpan interviews — composed of questions like "Have you ever thrown a party when your parents were out of town?" and "What did you eat for breakfast this morning?"

The answers are sometimes pretty interesting, and the "subjects" consist of folks like Christina Ricci (whose favorite Disney princess is Ariel), American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis (who doesn't think we should have a female president), Marilyn Manson (who wants to come back to life as a zombie), and Jamie Lee Curtis (who has a signature dance move). As It Lays' set design and musical introduction adds a bizarre and garish pop-sunset-DIY-dbag aesthetic that amusingly embellishes the larger than life L.A. theme. We've posted a few interviews below. Let us know if you dig them as much as we do. Visit the show website for more information on gallery screenings/exhibitions of As It Lays, currently playing in New York.
