If last weekend's pathetic box office is any indication, audiences are no longer suckered into a movie based on how many stars are in its cast. Perhaps some of the New Year's Eve stigma will have worn off by the time Rock of Ages hits theaters June 1st, 2012, though, because if this Apple-debuted trailer for the Adam Shankman-directed adaptation of the very popular Broadway musical is any indication, it does look to be potentially more amusing despite, on paper, sounding like a roll call of pretty faces and a name check of popular bands. To quote the official synopsis:
Rock of Ages tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock 'n' roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.
The pretty faces in question include Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Ackerman, Mary J. Blige, Bryan Cranston, Alec Baldwin, and Tom Cruise, though curiously the trailer does a good job of obscuring the latter, who is the magnet for the rest of the characters, until the end. Between Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which we can attest first hand is a ton fo fun, and Rock of Ages, perhaps Cruise will finally begin coaxing some Scientology-jaded audiences back to theaters.
