There's at least one thing to admire about Piranha 3DD: It's not pretending to be anything more than it is. If the new trailer (which Shock dug up) is any indication, it's not so much a sequel to Alexandre Aja's fun, sexy and gory remake of the classic Joe Dante nature-run-amok film as it is a wacky parody of the entire genre. It's as though Feast director Jon Gulager and Feast screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton watched Aja's film and all they remembered about it was the occasional nudity and the gore.
So if you thought Piranha 3D was too crass or too unrealistic, we have a feeling it's going to look positively sophisticated next to Piranha 3DD. The latter combines Danielle Panabaker, Katrina Bowden, Chris Zylka (Shark Night represent!), David Koechner, Ving Rhames, Gary Busey, and David Hasselhoff with a bunch of ancient piranha who have somehow infiltrated the filtration system of a water park that uses strippers with a gross amount of plastic surgery for lifeguards.
Why don't they all just stay out of the pool? Good question. Surely the movie has an answer, but we'll have to wait and see. And that wait may be a while considering Piranha 3DD is currently without a release date; it was bumped off the schedule last November and has yet to make a reappearance (which is never a good sign).
Note: While it is just a trailer, there's enough borderline offensive material that we'll offer up a potentially NSFW warning.
And just for comparison, since they probably have way too much plot logic in common, here's the (fake) trailer for Shark Pool:
