New 'Alita: Battle Angel' Trailer Promises an Action-Packed Epic Sci-fi Movie; Here's Everything We Know

Jul 23, 2018

Update: More than six months since the arrival of the first trailer for Alita: Battle Angel (which was then set to open this month), another spot has finally arrived. Once again, we are teased an epic sci-fi movie unlike anything we've seen before, but this trailer seems a little more action-heavy than the last one, in a good way. And the CG special effects, including some completely performance-captured humanoid characters, also looks even better than it did before.

Based on Yukito Kishiro's 1990 manga series Battle Angel Alita, the James Cameron-produced, Robert Rodriguez-helmed feature could be a surprise hit come December -- that's right, the movie is now releasing at Christmastime. If it's a hit, that would be a nice present for Fox while they keep waiting for Cameron to unleash his highly anticipated Avatar sequels. As far as this looks so far, the studio could be looking forward to Alita sequels, as well.

Watch the new trailer:

For many years, James Cameron wanted to adapt Battle Angel Alita, the 1990 manga series created by Yukito Kishiro about an amnesiac android. A few years ago, he and Fox finally got the dream project going with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez at the helm, and now it's actually been realized. The first trailer for the movie, titled Alita: Battle Angel, has arrived teasing a sci-fi action spectacular.

This seems like a cross between The Bourne Identity and AI movies like Ex Machina, but with Cameron's work on the script combined with Rodriguez's vision as a director, it is very promising. The title heroine, obviously designed to resemble a manga/anime character, is unlike anything we've seen in a live-action movie before. Like most Cameron projects, this will probably blow audiences away.

Watch the first trailer below.

What is James Cameron's involvement?

After spending many years trying to develop Alita: Battle Angel for himself to direct, Cameron is now a producer and co-writer of the movie, the script for which is also by Robert Rodriguez and Laeta Kalogridis (Terminator Genisys).

So it's a true Cameron and Rodriguez collaboration?

That seems to be the case, as Rodriguez is also a producer, in addition to co-writing and directing, alongside Cameron and his Avatar partner Jon Landau.

Who is in the movie?

Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) plays the titular Alita, enhanced with CG effects, and she's joined by Oscar winners Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly and Mahershala Ali, plus Ed Skrein, Keean Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Casper Van Dien, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeff Fahey and Eiza Gonzalez.

What is it about?

Here's the official synopsis, via Fox:

"Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (Avatar) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) create a groundbreaking new heroine in Alita: Battle Angel, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives."

When does it come out?

Alita: Battle Angel hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
