Warner Bros. Plans to Remake 'Little Shop of Horrors' with Joseph Gordon-Levitt

May 03, 2012

Funny story: I'd heard some rumblings about a new rendition of Little Shop of Horrors, and I was a little disappointed. Like most intelligent people, I truly adore the Frank Oz version of the tale, which arrived in 1986 with Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, a great monster, a ton of fantastic tunes...

Anyway, you know the film. It was based on a popular stage play that was, of course, inspired by a low-low-budget Roger Corman feature from 1960. (Jack Nichoson was in it!) You surely remember the songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, which they delivered right before helping to reinvigorate Disney with some music for The Little Mermaid.

New details (courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter): WB is moving ahead on a new version of the "mean green mother from outer space" horror / musical / comedy, and to that end they've hired Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) and Mr. Joseph Gordon-Levitt to produce and star. Yep, JGL in the role made semi-famous by the great Rick Moranis. I'm sorry, but that turns me from skeptical to optimistic in just one move. More on this one as it becomes available.
