True Skin short film still

Another day, another short film has landed its director a Hollywood payday. I’m telling you – if you want to break into the biz, make a short sci-fi movie. Hollywood can’t get enough of them.

Stephan Zlotescu is the latest guy to see his indie sci-fi short catch the attention of a major studio. Zlotescu made his name doing FX for a bunch of music videos for acts like Lady Gaga and Kanye West, but in his spare time he shot an indie quickie entitled True Skin.

The short, as /Film’s Russ Fischer points out, looks a lot like Blade Runner crossed with video game Deus Ex (particularly last year’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution). It’s about a dystopian future where body augmentations are all the rage – and have led to a treacherous black market for the enhancements.

Honestly, the short is okay. It never really does much of anything to set it apart from its obvious inspirations, but clearly Warner Bros. sees something in it since they’ve acquired the rights to develop it as a feature with David Heyman (who oversaw the entire Harry Potter franchise) producing and Zlotescu potentially getting the nod to direct. To be fair, it’s hard to judge the concept based on a six-minute short. Hopefully Zlotescu and crew can flesh this out and craft something really amazing.

We’ll have to wait and see if that happens or not. Until then, have a look at True Skin below and let us know what you think.
