Movie News: What's Next for Vin Diesel ('Soldiers') and Darren Aronofsky ('Spies'); First 'Vampire Academy' Trailer

Aug 15, 2013

Soldiers of the Sun: While Vin Diesel is still in talks to voice Groot the tree in Guardians of the Galaxy, his next starring role (voice AND body) has now been confirmed. He'll play the leader of a postapocalyptic military squad in Soldiers of the Sun; the squad's mission involves aliens and a "fabled city of gold." Diesel will also serve as one of the producers for the would-be franchise starter. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Zero Theorem: Terry Gilliam's films are (almost) always visual treats, and his upcoming Zero Theorem looks like no exception. Christoph Waltz stars as a computer hacker who is searching for the answer to the age-old question, "Why are we here?" A new image featuring actress Melanie Thierry as a seductively dressed nurse might be a bit distracting to his mission, however. The movie will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. [The Film Stage]

Red Sparrow: Director Darren Aronofsky, whose biblical epic Noah is heading for release on March 28, 2014, is looking for a change of pace. He's in early talks to direct Red Sparrow, a spy thriller set in contemporary Russia. Based on a novel by Jason Matthews, the story follows a Russian intelligence officer who is pressed into service as a "Sparrow," or "trained seductress," in order to ensnare a CIA intelligence operator. Vampire Academy Trailer: We just got our first look at Mark Waters' Vampire Academy, and now the first trailer has dropped, depicting a school where the students stay up all night and like to sink their teeth into their homework. Zoey Deutch stars as a half-human, half-vampire girl who is being trained as a "supernatural bodyguard" for her best friend, a princess. The movie is due out on February 14, 2014.
