If Vin Diesel’s acting career ever sputters out, the guy could probably get work and make a nice life for himself in marketing and promotions if the recent excitement over his Marvel movie comments are any indication. Give the guy credit: he knows how to create buzz.
The actor, who’s latest film Riddick opened this weekend, chatted with Maria Menounos recently (you can see the full hour-long video below), and he stoked the flames of fanboy passion just a bit more, hinting at a “merging of brands” for his future involvement with the comic book giant’s film division. What could this mean? Could Riddick be coming to the superhero universe? Your guess is as good as ours, but the Internet is buzzing with speculation.
Our friends over at Bleeding Cool have transcribed the parts of the interview where Diesel talks all things Marvel. And it’s fascinating and infuriating because it’s full of tantalizing things that never pay off in actual reveals. Who knew Diesel was such a tease?
Here are some of the highlights from the chat. See if you can decipher the hidden messages contained within.
“When I met with Marvel it wasn’t for anything immediate, it was to talk about a film that would be introduced in the Phase Three part of Marvel, not for a few years. You wouldn’t be able to see it for a few years. In my mind, Marvel were doing it right, they were enrolling me at the ground level which is the best way to enroll me.
"I had heard people over the last year people saying on the social media page, 'What’s up Vin? Why aren’t you going to Marvel? Why aren’t you doing anything with Marvel? It would be a crime of cinematic history for you not to be in [Marvel movies]'
"So I was thinking, 'This Marvel thing is really becoming really important for these people. What can I do? What should I think about?'
"I get the call, I go down to Marvel. A great meeting. It was even talking about something so big I can’t even talk about because it’s like the merging of brands in a way, which I won’t get into. That was something way, way, way, way, way down the road."
What happens then is Diesel essentially gets offered the job of voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, which should appease fans wanting him in a Marvel film now, but that whole merging of brands things is still in the works somewhere in Marvel’s master plan for Phase Three. Here's the whole interview if you want to hear it from his own mouth:
