Sony Reportedly Going R-Rated With 'Venom,' Plus: New 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Teaser

Mar 27, 2017

The R rating isn't exactly a new thing for the superhero genre. The Blade trilogy did great business, and earned a lot of fans, by letting the blood flow long before superhero movies were the tent pole business they are today. That said, the R-rated superhero movie is definitely trending again. Fox has had tremendous fortune with Deadpool and Logan, and now Sony is said to be getting in on the game with an R-rated Venom.

This rumor comes from Collider, who are also reporting that their new Venom movie will serve as a launching point for Sony's own Marvel universe (including the recently announced Black Cat and Silver Sable movie), which will be totally separate from Disney/Marvel's existing Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Sony's own Spider-Man: Homecoming.

That will no doubt be a bummer to fans, who would much rather see the MCU expand than splinter further. Alas, that is highly unlikely to happen at this stage. The rights to all of these characters were diced up long ago across multiple studios and they are all trying to keep their own franchises going. We're lucky that Sony and Disney could reach an agreement on bringing Spidey into the MCU, but if this Venom rumor is true, then a lot of Spidey's friends (and enemies) won't be joining him.

And speaking of Spider-Man, we're going to get a new Homecoming trailer tomorrow. But since a superhero movie can't just drop a trailer these days without teasing it, we've got this tiny sliver of footage today. Check it out.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017. As of now, Venom is scheduled to hit theaters on October 5, 2018.
