Update: Fandango spoke with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb on the phone today, who had this to say about the casting talks:
“Look, Jamie Foxx is a genius actor, and I think he’s electrifying. That’s my standard quote right now,” Webb told me, with a laugh. “But I think he’s a brilliant actor. From his work back in In Living Color to Ray to what he did in Ali, he’s just one of the great character actors of our generation.”
It was only a few weeks ago that Sony locked in director Marc Webb to return for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it seems the studio hasn't slowed down any on putting the sequel together. After bringing in Shailene Woodley to play Mary Jane, Variety is reporting that they're now in "early talks" with Jamie Foxx to play the film's big bad, and while the filmmakers wouldn't confirm who he'd actually be playing, the trade thinks they know: Electro.
If the villain's name didn't make it clear enough, Electro has the ability to manipulate electricity as he pleases. He was even one of the characters speculated to have been hidden in the ending of the first film, though at the time the only connecting dot was that lightning was flashing outside the window.
It's unclear if that really was a clue or just a coincidence, though, and Variety isn't spilling any more plot details, but we're sure that'll be more than enough to fuel fan speculation. Regardless if Foxx is playing Electro or someone else, however, if the talks progress to a final deal, he will be playing the first black villain Spider-Man has faced on-screen, and we think that's pretty awesome. What about you?
