Update: At the time of this post, all we had was the above illustration of the new Simpsons area of Universal Studios Orlando, but now we've got video as well to offer a tour of the new food area. Sure, it's basically just a food court in Simpsons cosplay, but it's still great to be able to walk into a re-creation of Moe's Tavern and order a Flaming Moes, or see the Frying Dutchman's neon sign in real life.
Keep in mind they're still building out the area and haven't completed construction on the Duff Brewery, Lard Lad, Jebediah Springfield's statue or Kang & Kodos' Twirl 'n' Hurl ride.
Many of us were screaming “D’oh!” when Universal Studios Orlando closed the Jaws ride at its Orlando theme park in January of 2012, but at least it is adding one new cool area with (presumably) the space freed up by destroying Amity Island – a re-creation of the most famous Springfield in all of America.
That’s right, fans will soon be able to stop at Moe’s for a Duff Beer or swing by and nab a Krusty Burger in the hometown of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson as Universal Orlando launches its very own version of Springfield.
The Simpsons’ Ride will be the anchor of the new area – which features shops and restaurants made famous on the long-running Fox animated series. Everything from the the Frying Dutchman to Lard Lad Donuts will be represented on the culinary side, while those who like their amusements a little more geeky will apparently be able to swing by the Android’s Dungeon comic shop for an overpriced bauble or two.
It’s not all about stores and restaurants, though. The park is also unveiling a new ride named Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n Hurl – wherein the two aliens will take “foolish humans” on a ride into orbit. Please experience this attraction before downing a few Krusty Burgers…
Universal is hyping the project early, stating:
“This new expansion will broaden and deepen the already incredible experience at Universal, by bringing to life the iconic landmarks of Springfield that fans have grown to love,” said Jeffrey Godsick, president, Fox Consumer Products. “Fans will literally be able to live and breathe Springfield as they visit the statue of Jebediah, enjoy a Krusty Burger, and have a seat at Moe’s Tavern, which are just a few of the great experiences awaiting at Universal.”
Check out the concept photo above for an idea of what you can expect when The Simpsons invade Universal Orlando this summer. And hey, be thankful the park planners didn’t just use this space for even more Harry Potter.
