We’ve been tracking the progress of Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, adapted from Michel Faber's 2000 novel of the same name, for some time now. Scarlett Johansson plays an alien seductress sent to Earth by a corporation to prey on hitchhikers. The first full trailer for the surreal sci-fi tale has arrived, and it’s as mind-bending as the hypnotizing teasers we’ve been treated with.
We see Johansson luring men into her van, which is something the actress did in reality. Eventually the men were made aware of the truth and became part of the film, which adds another fascinating layer to Glazer’s concepts of desire and power. Vast darkness overwhelms many of the frames, with figures disappearing into a murky, metaphorical infinity.
Mica Levi’s score is the perfect accompaniment for Glazer’s parallel alien world. The Sexy Beast and Birth director’s latest intoxicated critics during festival rounds. Our own Erik Davis called it “a creepy little sci-fi thinker that burrows itself underneath your skin and tests the way you perceive sexuality.” If this trailer doesn’t entice you into theaters on April 4 (for a limited release, later expanding), then check your pulse.
