Uncharted and Akira Both Need New Directors

Uncharted and Akira Both Need New Directors

May 26, 2011

Today two higher profile geek film projects took a step backwards with the (not exactly surprising) loss of their respective directors. First up was The Wrap's story that David O. Russell (The Fighter) left an adaptation of the hit PS3 adventure game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Russell had been attached to the project pretty much since it was first announced a few months ago, but according to the outlet Sony and Russell couldn't get over some creative differences.

As for what those differences were, we simply don't know. Perhaps it had to do with the earlier rumors that Russell was changing the game's character dynamics, creating family members where there were none before. Maybe Sony didn't like Mark Wahlberg, Russell's top choice, for the lead role. Only some execs at Sony and Russell's friends and family know for sure. However we do know that Sony is still interested in making an Uncharted movie. They're still seeking new writers to develop the project, so anyone dreaming of an Uncharted movie starring Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake need not give up hope just yet.

As for the second abandoned project of the day, that would be Warner Bros.' live-action remake of the hit Japanese manga/anime Akira. Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) had been sitting in the director's chair, but now according to Deadline he's currently looking around WB for another chair to sit in. As with Uncharted, the reasons cited here have to do with the always ambiguous "creative differences," but with Akira things are a little more clear. Hughes had reportedly wanted Keanu Reeves to star in the film. Reeves passed on the offer, however, and it looks like Hughes' interest in the sci-fi flick passed as well.

Again, as is the case with Sony and Uncharted, WB isn't ready to get out of the Akira game for good. The loss of a director hasn't swayed the project one bit. In fact, Deadline says it's still on the fast track at the studio.
