In the early stages of casting Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, there were a lot of big names being bandied about. Michael K. Williams and Will Smith were two of the major players being considered for the role of Django — a slave who wins his freedom in the antebellum era of the Deep South and sets out to rescue his wife from a wicked plantation owner. The role ultimately went to Jamie Foxx, who won a BET award for Best Actor along with several other accolades for the heroic part.
One actor we didn’t hear about who wanted Foxx’s part was model-turned-actor Tyrese Gibson. The Fast and Furious and Transformers star recently posted an audition tape he created while vying for the role of the revenge-seeking Django. The accent is a little wonky at times, and his emotional range doesn’t project quite like Foxx’s, but it’s a solid try.
Foxx truly felt made for the role. He’s a Texas boy with horse-riding skills and a natural twang. That quiet, brooding loner side of the actor came quite naturally. Let us know what you make of Tyrese’s performance in this audition reel and if you think Tarantino made the right decision.
