Today is a sad day for lovers of Hostess products, as the company behind Twinkies, Devil Dogs and a bunch of other treats eaten by seven-year-olds and/or people who are stoned is going out of business. The real tragedy here is that thousands of people are losing their jobs, but naturally the Internet has instead zeroed in on the fact that this may mean... well, no more Twinkies. Fortunately, Hostess says they'll be auctioning off their recipes to the highest bigger, but who knows how long before Twinkies are back on the market.

For me, Twinkies were a part of my life when I was in seventh grade. As a child, I went through these stages of being addicted to various after-school snacks. First it was peanut butter and jelly, then graham crackers, and at one point I was eating Twinkies every single day for months. They were the perfect snack for a kid who loved cake. They weren't messy, and if you timed your bites right you could get a little cake and a little filling every time! This was an exciting thing to a kid.

Eventually I fell out of love with Twinkies, and so it was. I never returned to them and haven't eaten one in years, but I've always enjoyed the different ways Twinkies have injected their way into pop culture. Most of the time when you see Twinkies show up in a TV show or movie, it's because they're the only food that survived an apocalyptic event. Obviously this is ironic because the Twinkie could survive the apocalypse and not bankruptcy, but after satisfying folks for over 80 years one has to imagine the Twinkie will continue to find ways to survive and satisfy.

So until the Twinkie returns either in its current form or as some half cake, half robot sent from the future to terminate those mini-cupcakes you're always tempted to buy at supermarkets but never do, we'll have to settle for the memorable movie cameos the Hostess snack has made over the years. Here are some of my favorites.
