See the Freaky, Animatronic Baby That Almost Invaded the 'Twilight' Franchise

Nov 05, 2013

When it comes to movies, we’ll take practical effects over CGI any day, but in the case of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, a certain practical effect was banned from the set due to its utter creepiness. We’re talking about baby Renesmee — the half-human, half-vampire daughter of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.

Since Renesmee has an otherworldly look about her and reaches her full physical maturity around seven years old (when she appears to be about 17), director Bill Condon thought it best to use a “real" baby. He went with an animatronic puppet, which you can see in this video clip we spotted on Badass Digest. The doll was dubbed “Chuckesmee,” because it’s terrifying. Actress Nikki Reed, who plays Rosalie Hale in the film series, handles the puppet like a ticking time bomb — and we can’t blame her. It looks like it could bite.

Once Condon realized Chuckesmee wasn’t going to cut it, he went with a CGI baby and spared Twihards from years of therapy. Don Mancini: if you’re reading this, we hope you’ll find a spot for Chuckesmee in the next Child’s Play sequel. The rest of you Google the work of Margaret Keane to see more children with freakishly large eyes.
