The Truman Show's plot, about a man (Jim Carrey) who doesn't realize he's the star of a reality TV show, has been referenced by so many others, that you can know all about it without ever actually having seen the movie . Plus, since The Truman Show hit in 1998 right as reality TV was just becoming a thing and years before it would start to hit peak mania, it's not only one of the earliest critiques of our relationship with a TV fad, but it's an enduring one because apparently reality TV will never, ever go away.
Basically, it's a highly singular film that was made by the right people about the right subject and at the right time. That's why it's a little strange to us that Paramount is planning to remake it as a TV show.
The Wrap has a report outlining the studio's plans to amp up television production, and this new Truman Show is apparently one of only a handful of projects on its development slate. Unfortunately that's really all we know about it at this point, so there's no early hint of how you turn such a relatively simple premise of a man learning he's the star of a TV show into a story that sustains any sense of mystery from week to week. If we had to pitch for the show, we'd make it about the people who are actually running the series. Set it in a slightly futuristic time, too, and have Truman's world be a period piece. That way all of the drama comes from the morality of the people running the show and the actors hired to fill out Truman's fake world, and not from Truman himself since we all already know what's going to happen to him.
Paramount TV has hired Jason Fisher as the head of production, and he's the man who oversaw the production of The Walking Dead, Mad Men and Breaking Bad. So, if he can bring some of that AMC magic to his new job, maybe a Truman Show series could be something special.
The other shows Paramount TV has in the works are Terminator (which will tie into the new Terminator: Genesis movie), The Alienist, based on Caleb Carr's novel about murder in 1896 New York City, and a miniseries about famous aviator Charles Lindbergh.
