The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: Director Peter Jackson is pioneering the use of 48 frames per second for the upcoming release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but the film’s presentation in high frame rate -- a highly touted process that reportedly improves picture quality dramatically -- will be quite limited, and may not even be available in all major cities. Warner Bros. wants to “test the marketplace” first to see how audiences respond; theaters won’t even be equipped to project high frame rate until next month, at the earliest. [Showblitz]

Reese Witherspoon in The Beard: The two most recent romantic comedies starring Reese Witherspoon -- This Means War and How Do You Know -- each tried to stretch the genre, but only the former met with popular success. She hopes to continue that success with her next rom-com, The Beard, in which she’ll evidently play a woman who dates gay men (or perhaps just one man, details are scarce) with a desire to appear straight. She’ll also take on producing duties, which she hasn’t done for several years. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Tom Clancy's Without Remorse: With its Jack Ryan reboot -- the one with Chris Pine, to be directed by Kenneth Branagh -- moving forward, Paramount is trying to kickstart another property in the universe created by author Tom Clancy. The studio is close to a deal with Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) to draft a new script for Without Remorse, which follows an “incredibly bleak and violent storyline” set in the Vietnam era. McQuarrie directed the upcoming Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise, which has reportedly made him a hot property himself. [Deadline]

Trouble with the Curve Trailer: We thought Clint Eastwood might have retired from acting, but he returns, grouchy as ever, as a legendary baseball scout in the first trailer for Trouble with the Curve. Amy Adams costars as his daughter, with Justin Timberlake as a potential suitor; the movie hits theaters on September 21. [Yahoo! Movies]
