'Transcendence' Trailer(s): 'The Dark Knight' Cinematographer Directs His First Trippy Movie

Dec 23, 2013

Christopher Nolan collaborator and cinematographer Wally Pfister has set out on his own. Transcendence will star Johnny Depp as a scientist who, along with his wife and research partner (Rebecca Hall), work in the field of superintelligence. Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins Jr., Kate Mara and Paul Bettany also star in the sci-fi story arriving in April 2014.

Here's the official synopsis:

Dr. Will Caster is an artificial intelligence researcher who strives to create a machine that possesses sentience and collective intelligence. Extremists who oppose technological advancement target him, but their actions drive him toward his goal. Caster also wants to become part of the new technology, and his wife Evelyn and his best friend Max Waters, also researchers, question the wisdom of this drive. Caster's goal to acquire knowledge becomes one to acquire power, and he seems to be unstoppable.

The first teaser trailer for the film is now online, and while there's not much footage, we get a real Terminator vibe from it, but moreso if it were a Terminator prequel that told a story about machines and computers becoming more and more intelligent, along with the consequences that come along with that. Whether Pfister followers in the footsteps of great cinematographers who became directors, like Nicolas Roeg, remains to be seen. Given his previous work, we know Transcendence will probably contain a gritty realism that grounds his sci-fi universe.

Do you have high hopes for Pfister's directorial debut?
