Tom Cruise's Biblical Epic 'Methuselah' Gets a 'Pirates' Director

Oct 28, 2016

Tom Cruise sure looks good for his age, but soon he'll be looking even better when he plays a man of almost 1,000 years. The actor remains attached to the bibical epic Methuselah, in which he will portray the long-living figure of the Old Testament, who is also notable for being the grandfather of Noah. This is a project that has been in the works for a while under Harry Potter producer David Heyman, and now the movie finally has a director.

According to Deadline, Joachim Ronning is taking the helm for what's also being described as a survival tale. He's had some experience with that sort of thing, as he co-directed the Oscar-nominated Norwegian film Kon-Tiki, about Thor Heyerdal's famous 1947 raft sailing expedition across the Pacific Ocean. Heyman has also given us some intense movies involving survival, namely Ravenous and Gravity.

Both men are currently involved with big blockbuster franchises, Ronning as the director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tails and Heyman as producer of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Cruise is also working on a major franchise, Universal's The Mummy reboot. Interestingly enough, that movie will also feature Russell Crowe, who played Noah in Darren Aronofsky's 2014 Biblical epic. There, Methuselah was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins.
