Tom Cruise Teases 'Edge of Tomorrow 2' and 'Mission: Impossible 6'

Tom Cruise Teases 'Edge of Tomorrow 2' and 'Mission: Impossible 6'

Jul 29, 2015

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, which we can attest is a heck of a good time at the movies, hits theaters on Friday (July 31, 2015 to be precise), and that means star Tom Cruise has been popping up everywhere to promote it. In doing so, he's already begun dropping some teases about a few sequels to movies of his that we might see.

Mission: Impossible 6 could go next summer.

While stopping by The Daily Show, Jon Stewart asked Cruise if he had plans on making any more after this one, to which Cruise let out an unambiguous "We're starting to work on it now and will probably start shooting it next summer."

It's nice that Cruise isn't playing a noncommittal game of "Let's see how this one does," which you often hear about sequel talk before a movie opens. He wants to make another one, so they're going to make another one. Maybe it doesn't happen quite as quickly as next summer, but they're going for it.

He's Already pitched Edge of Tomorrow 2...

Cruise told MTV that he had an idea for a sequel to the alien/time travel hybrid that "could be so much fun." He's already pitched it to director Doug Liman and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, and considering he didn't follow that up with "And they told me to go to hell," it sounds like that door is still open.

...but he'll wait at least a year for Emily Blunt.

Cruise has apparently even already talked to Emily Blunt about doing it, to which she simply asked that he give her another year before they do it (presumably because her schedule is already all booked up).

And what's awesome about this is Cruise acknowledging that so much of what makes Edge of Tomorrow great has to due with what Blunt brought to the table. Even in his appearance on The Daily Show, Cruise gives Blunt a gracious plug when Jon Stewart brought up the movie. It's refreshing to see a huge star who isn't afraid to share the spotlight.

So what is Cruise up to next?

After his promo obligations for Mission: Impossible are over, he'll fly back to the set of the thriller Mena, directed by Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman. It's inspired by the true story of a pilot who became a drug runner for the CIA in the 1980s, which sounds exactly like the kind of drama material that earned Cruise three Best Actor Oscar nominations in the '90s.

Wait, I thought Jack Reacher 2 is happening?

It is, but we don't know the exact time table of that just yet. We do know that Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie had to pass on the project because he wouldn't have enough time to prep it and fulfill all his obligations on Rogue Nation, and that the sequel will be directed by Ed Zwick, who directed Cruise in The Last Samurai. If the plan is for M:I 6 to film in the summer of 2016, then Cruise could likely fit in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in the coming winter or spring.

Okay, but I also thought Top Gun 2 was happening?

That's something that's been talked about for years and years, so at this point you probably shouldn't count on it happening any time soon. Since Tom Cruise has said he doesn't want to use a bunch of CGI in a Top Gun movie, you're probably going to have to wait for him to learn how to fly a jet plane first. And considering the lengths Cruise goes to do his own stunts in movies, that may not be much of an exaggeration.
