Today's Big Sequel News: 'The Mechanic 2,' 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' and 'Pitch Perfect 2'

Feb 07, 2014

Statham in The MechanicWho’s ready for some sequel news? Hopefully you are, because we’ve got three updates about upcoming films with the number two in their titles – including one from Marvel.

We’ll get to that Marvel stuff in a bit, but first we've got an update on another cinematic superhero: Jason Statham. Word is out that Nu Image is offering up a sequel to the 2011 action film The Mechanic. Statham would return to his role as a professional assassin with a code of honor in the follow-up, and now there’s talk that a director is interested.

Said filmmaker is German director Dennis Gansel. Gansel might not be a household name here in the States, but he’s a pretty well-respected member of the German cinema industry. Hollywood has been interested in luring him westward for some time now, and it appears this might be the film that finally brings him to American shores.

No word yet on whether Ben Foster or any of the rest of the original film’s cast will return in this new installment, but really – do we need anything more than Statham? [via THR]

Kendrick and Wilson returning for Pitch Perfect 2

Pitch Perfect was one of last year’s biggest hits, grossing over $115 million on a measly $17 million budget. Naturally, a sequel is in the works because Hollywood loves making money (and sequels).

One of the biggest questions surrounding a sequel was whether or not Universal could get Amy Kendrick and Rebel Wilson back as Becca and Fat Amy in the follow up. Well, the good news is the answer to that question is yes.

Both actresses are confirmed for the sequel, which will be in theaters in May of 2015. Can the duo recapture the magic of the original film? We won’t know for sure until next year – but I wouldn’t bet against them.  [via Coming Soon]

Which Phase Three movie will fill Marvel’s open 2016 release slot?

We love talking about Marvel movies around these parts – and today we’ve got another rumor about the company’s upcoming "Phase Three" plans.

With three release dates on the calendar for its third wave of superhero movies (and only one title officially announced), speculation has run rampant in regards to what movies Marvel will release in 2016 and 2017. If this newest info pans out, we can stop wondering about 2016.

JoBlo’s source indicates that Marvel has plans to release a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel in 2016, which is a pretty gutsy move, considering we don’t know if audiences will take to the first film yet. However, early buzz for the Comic-Con footage was overwhelmingly positive – and Marvel is apparently running with it by not only planning a sequel, but also talking about an animated series as well.

No word yet on whether or not James Gunn will return to helm a follow-up adventure, but if Guardians of Galaxy goes supernova when it opens this August, we expect Kevin Feige and company will do everything in their power to keep the filmmaker in the fold.

Honestly, when you hear that Marvel has plans in place through 2021, you have to wonder how DC will ever catch up this point. [via JoBlo]
