Today in Great Bill Murray Quotes: On Not Answering the Phone for 'Iron Man' and Parenting Tips

May 31, 2012

If you're a Bill Murray fan and looking for a fun read today, might we suggest clicking over to his interview in Esquire, in which Murray covers everything from his inaccessibility to parenting to living in one house with everyone while filming Moonrise Kingdom. A couple interesting tidbits came when it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. had wanted Murray for a role in Iron Man, but no one could find him.

Replies Murray: "I'm not trying to be coy. It's just practical for me. When the phone started ringing too many times, I had to take it back to what I can handle. I take my chances on a job or a person as opposed to a situation. I don't like to have a situation placed over my head."

Guess he wasn't in the mood to sign a 9-picture deal with Marvel. Moving on, Murray's best quote (in our opinion) comes when he's asked for any fathering tips.

Replies Murray: "If you bite on everything they throw at you, they will grind you down. You have to ignore a certain amount of stuff. The thing I keep saying to them lately is: "I have to love you, and I have the right to ignore you." When my kids ask what I want for my birthday or Christmas or whatever, I use the same answer my father did: "Peace and quiet." That was never a satisfactory answer to me as a kid — I wanted an answer like "A pipe." But now I see the wisdom of it: All I want is you at your best — you making this an easier home to live in, you thinking of others."

As someone with two young kids at home, I couldn't agree with the man more. Definitely check out the entire interview since it's certainly worth a read.
