Image of the Day: James Cameron, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet Floating in Water for 'Titanic'

Aug 09, 2011

There's something real eerie about this behind-the-scenes image from Titanic. It features James Cameron giving some directions to Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet while all three float on a prop (or in this case a piece of the ship). This is during one of the film's final scenes, where Jack and Rose float in the frigid waters following the Titanic's sinking. This, to me, is the film's most powerful moment. The entire three-hour-plus running time builds up to the accident by way of a blossoming romantic relationship between Rose and Jack. And right as we begin to fall in love with this couple -- smash! The ship goes down and we strap ourselves in for an hours-worth of survival action at its best.

Yeah, yeah -- people roll their eyes when they see or hear about Titanic, writing it off as that corny love story flick that got lucky on its way to becoming one of the highest grossing movies of all time. But it's real ambitious (for its time), and the last third of this sucker packs one helluva punch. Watching this film unfold in theaters was a special moviegoing memory for me, and when this scene hit -- after all that set up -- it was hard not to feel like, as per James Cameron above, you were right there with Rose and Jack on that piece of wood the entire time.
