'Titanic 2' Is Coming ... Kind Of

May 01, 2012

An Australian mining magnate apparently has a lot of time and money on his hands — and a jealous beef with director James Cameron (we're making that part up). He's commissioned a Chinese shipyard to begin construction on an exact replica of the Titanic. Billionaire Clive Palmer wants to make his reconstruction of the passenger liner an exact match in every detail, installing modern technology to, you know, avoid sinking the way the original did back in 1912. Construction starts next year, with hopes that the ship will be set to sail sometime in 2016, making its maiden voyage from London to New York.
"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer shared during a press conference. "Of course, it will sink if you put a hole in it. It is going to be designed so it won't sink. But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.'' What a comedian.
The Titanic collided with an iceberg 100 years ago, causing the deaths of 1,514 people. Cameron brought the maritime disaster to life on the big screen in 1997 (with a 3D release in theaters this year). His personal obsession with the event has led him to re-investigate the sinking and make several dives to the wreckage site. While some people wait with morbid fascination to see if the real-life Titanic reboot is smooth sailing, let's estimate how long it will take for someone to resurrect the Titanic sequel idea again. Oddly enough, a direct-to-DVD version already exists. [via CNN]
