Ti West's Space Baby Film Finds its Immaculate Space Mother

Jan 19, 2012

When we spoke to Ti West (whose latest film, The Innkeepers, is currently available on VOD) last Fall, he had two feature projects that ready to tackle next. One was a werewolf comedy with an undisclosed title that the writer-director was fairly tight lipped about, the other was a spaceship-set sci-fi movie called The Side Effect. Regarding the latter project, West was able to give a few more hints about what kind of production it would be, but this week brings the first real scoop about the film. Now, thanks to Deadline, we know that it will be about a woman who signs up for a pharmaceutical company's experiment that requires her to spend several months aboard a spaceship all by her lonesome, only to be quite surprised when she becomes pregnant during her orbital stay.

The immaculately-conceiving space mother in question will be played by none other than Liv Tyler. It's an interesting cast choice for sure, because, though Tyler is no stranger to the horror or sci-fi genres, she's never anchored a project quite like this before. However, West has a flawless track record when it comes to casting his lead gals, so we've little doubt that Tyler will be as memorable in The Side Effect as Jocelin Donahue is in The House of the Devil or Sara Paxton in The Innkeepers.

This will be Ti West's first film working with producer Ted Hope (Adventureland, Super, Marha Marcy May Marlene) and his fifth feature with producer Peter Phok (who also produced West's segment in the horror anthology V/H/S, which will premiere in a matter of days at this year's Sundance Film Festival).
