'Thor 2' is Set for Summer 2013

Jun 30, 2011

There wasn't much of a question regarding whether we'd see another Thor movie after the first one performed so well this year grossing $437 million worldwide, however because there were no announcements shortly before or after the film hit theaters (unlike Captain America, which already has writers onboard for the sequel), folks were a little skeptical as to whether Thor would get his own solo sequel or be saved for further Avengers sequels. Well, Deadline has answered that question, informing us that Marvel and Disney will release Thor 2 in Summer 2013.

Thor director Kenneth Branagh won't be back, so they'll seek out a director to replace him. And yes, Chris Hemsworth will of course reprise his role as Thor, though we imagine Natalie Portman won't return either. With Iron Man 3 already slotted for a May 3, 2013 release, that makes Thor 2 the other Marvel movie that will hit later that summer -- giving Marvel two sequels for 2013 and no original solo launches. Are they saving Ant-Man for 2014, or will they find a way to squeeze in a third? Expect some big Marvel announcements in the days leading up to Comic-Con -- this story is just getting started ...

Thor will next be seen in The Avengers, due out in theaters on May 4th, 2012.
